Friday, May 7th, 2010

It’s definitely time to share the loveliness of others.

I’ve been really enjoying black & white lately & so I thought I’d make the rest of you enjoy it too. ; )

Day Sixty Four by this is waar.

During my collection process off of flickr, I noticed something. Weird. As I was going back & culling through the images I realized I’d only chosen 1 self-portrait that wasn’t done by a female photographer. I started to dismiss this, as I’m more prone to “dreamy” images & as a girl, looking for inspiration for my self portraits, I was more likely to look at portraits by other females. Logical. Except I decided to find 1 or 2 more male self-portraits that I really liked. And I started searching through flickr.

Female self-portraits far outweighed male submissions to various self-portrait groups. Go to flickr & poke around for yourself. You’ll see what I mean.  In fact, I found several groups dedicated to female self-portraits, but not a single one dedicated to male self-portraits (I searched specifically for it, and got general self-portrait groups for the first 3 or so result pages)… This seems exceptionally odd to me since the field of photography used to be very dominated by males.  Of course, this is changing as we female photographers keep joining the ranks, but I still found it odd that I couldn’t find many male self-portraits in a modern photography forum environment.

With that in mind, I collected a variety of male self-portraits that I found artistic & wonderful & am including some of them in this post!  : )  I was going to group them all together & follow up with female self-portraits, but I wanted to mix them together because I think the effect is much more inspiring!

Poladroids! Neat-o Program.

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Really, it is a super Neat-o program.  It creates Digital Polaroids (thus the extra “d”) for you right on your desktop.  It’s like a modern version of old photography.  I love it!  You can even shake the image on your desktop to help develop it.  Really.  Check it out!

http://www.poladroid.net/

And, of course, some samples (I can’t share just one!).  And Abby will love me for it since there’s another preview for her! Hehe.

Go Poladroids!

Diptychs (2 for 1)

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Diptychs are a pairing of two images (in this case photographs) to create one work of art.

They fascinate me because there is so much that can be done with diptychs and  yet if they’re not done correctly they can seem a little cliche.  So successful diptychs are witty, artistic and beautiful, at least measured by me.  : )  I’ve been interested in them for some time & have done a few on my own, however, today, I wanted to share diptychs that I love done by other photographers.  I hope you enjoy!

Inspiration: Lara Jade

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Lara Jade was an artist I discovered back in High School & then lost only to re-discover her a while back. Her photography is so beautiful!

Her posing, colors & the “romantic” feel are all reasons that I admire her work. And she’s only 19! That’s so impressive.

I hope you enjoy her work. Websites to see more are (as usual) at the bottom.

“Droplets” {A Self-Portrait}
I admire her self-portrait abilities.

“Tranquil”
I love Parasols… if anyone knows where to pick one up at a good price, do let me know!

“Cerise”
The depth of field & framing with the leaves is beautiful!

“Last of Days”
Colors! And razor sharp processing!

“Moribund Tree”
The shape of the tree combined with the model’s pose is so fascinating!

“Hampton Court II”
This model’s skin looks like porcelain…

“Moment”
I just love “caught” moments like this!

“Ornithophobia” {It means Fear of Birds}

LaraJade.co.uk. Her official website.
Deviantart.com. Her deviantart account, if you like that site better.

PS I’d be working on those photos I keep mentioning (like a broken record) but my hardware is giving me difficulties. Of course. Keep checking back because I will get them posted soon. Scout’s honor (which is questionable since I was never a Girl Scout or even a Brownie!)

Almost Alice & A Bird on A Bike: Maggie Taylor

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Who can resist an artist who is willing to put a bird on a bike? Her beautiful images are a cross, at least to me, between painting and photography. All of her finished products have been worked through Photoshop, sometimes getting edits over months at a time. The images are surreal, vivid, seamless, beautiful & best of all, tell stories. Whether it’s an illustration of Alice in Wonderland or their own little single framed sized curiousities, Taylor’s pieces demand a second, deeper look.

So now that I’ve bragged on how awesome she is, here’s a few samples & then links for your viewing pleasure.

Action Resources — Freebies for Photoshop

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I LOVE actions & am trying to force myself to avoid the addiction. Yet, I want to spread the action love & I thought I’d post a little list of some of my favorite action download sites. As far as I know, all are free for commercial use & if anyone finds Terms of Use that deviate from that please, please, please let me know!

All of these are for adding pop to Portraits (and maybe landscapes – but I don’t do much work with those, so it’s up to you). I’m not a fan of text actions, so there aren’t any listed, but google can always help you find those resources.

http://totallyradactions.com/ These actions are super sweet but to get the whole pack, you’ll have to pay. However, the link I’ve provided will point you to the “samples” page so you can get a taste of how good these actions are. If you download the samples for both pack 1 & 2, you’ll get 6-7 free actions.

http://thepioneerwoman.com/ There are two sets here and don’t miss the second set (check the left side bar for the link) because it’s my favorite! These actions are lovely & well-worth download (especially when they’re free!)

http://coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/ This is one of my favorites. I RSS her blog because she comes out with a new action every 2 weeks or so. Some are a little soft for my taste, but others are fantastic – especially the Color Pop sets!

http://night-fate.deviantart.com : A HUGE conglomeration of actions. I still haven’t cracked the surface on downloading them – but I kinda like being able to visit & find new stuff when I’m in the mood for a new set.

http://manicho.deviantart.com/ Another huge set of actions – 50 in one download! However, some of them are a bit overdone for my tastes, but others may like them just fine! Either way, they’re at least fun to check out!

David Ward Photography Actions on Adobe Exchange I just found these today & they look pretty sweet. Though I am partial to the beauty of Black & White – quick, stop me from converting all of my photos! – & Vintage-y effects, still, these look pretty fun. Can’t wait to give them a few good tries & see how it goes! PS, if you don’t have an Adobe Acct & don’t want to make one, they can be found here, here, and here!

http://www.mulletgod.org/photoshopactions/ Click the “download” link at the top to get to the actions – but first, take a look at what others are doing with them! Awesome!

And because it’s always better with a picture, here are some samples with the super fantastic & lovely Kristin:

SOOC – Straight out of Camera
#1 – Totally Rad Actions “Super Fun Happy”
#2 – Coffee Shop’s B&W Actions “Moody”
#3 – Mulletgod’s “Vintage White”
#4 – Night-Fate’s “Set 45 — #5″
#5 – Pioneer Woman, Set 2 “Heartland”

PS Lovely font is Margarosa

PPS If you have no idea what “actions” are and why I’m babbling about them, check out this link or this one, or, hey, even both if you want a thorough introduction.
